There's no worse feeling than waking with a craving you can't shake, and not knowing how to satisfy it. Today's example comes in the shape of a battered fish. So if you're an expat missing the taste of home, or a Maltese person who cannot wait to tuck into a fried delight, here are eight places to satisfy everything you need.

1. Fins & Gills

With a name like that, you know you're in for a treat. This small take away shop in San Paul's Bay hasn't been around for a year, but hype for its fresh fish and chips has already gained quite the following on social media.

2. Reflections

Mellieħa's Reflections is one of the best rated eateries for fish and chips, and the fact that it's one of the cheapest is really just the cherry on the cake.

3. Sea Shell Restaurant

For less than €6, this beautiful monster can be all yours. If you think you're up for the challenge, Buġibba's Tourist Street is where you need to head on down to.

4. STAR Fish Bar

Gżira's claim to fish and chip fame is that this place also offers amazing calamari rings as a side, and a wide selection of pies for those who'd prefer baked, not fried.

5. The Diamond

Xlendi's The Diamond is one of those places that has people on Facebook commenting about how they're going to be sending all their friends there on a special recommendation for the fish and chips. And if the photos following those comments are anything to go by, this actually happens on a weekly basis.

6. Sammy's Tavern

A cosy restaurant overlooking Xemxija Bay, Sammy's is a culinary experiment with an ever-changing menu to complement the seasons. If you're looking for a bit of a different (and fancier) take on fish and chips, make Sammy's your next stop.

7. The Dubliner

An Irish pub in St. Julian's with some of Malta's best-rated fish and chips; what more could you wish for? If you're looking for a good grub to go with that pint of Guinness, The Dubliner has got you sorted.

8. Cod Almighty

A pun like that deserves to wrap the whole list in style. Cod Almighty and its neighbour The Whyte Hart (a great hangout in Buġibba in its own right) are the talk of the town on the North side of Malta, and the Almighty's large cod and chips is consistently rated as one of the best on the island.
