The Soup Kitchen OFM – Valletta will receive the European Citizen’s Prize of 2023 this week during a formal ceremony celebrating the charity’s inspiring social aid.

“The Soup Kitchen is being recognised for the solidarity, social inclusion, and human dignity values it embodies in its work,” the European Parliament (EP) wrote.

The annual prize aims to recognise initiatives in each member state that contribute to cooperation in the EU and promote European values.

More specifically, the honourable prize is given to projects organised by people or organisations that encourage a mutual understanding and closer integration between EU citizens; cross-border cooperation that builds a stronger European spirit, and; the promotion of European values and fundamental rights.

The soup kitchen was nominated by Maltese MEP David Casa who noted that the charity opened soon after inflation hit food prices driving those at the periphery to seek essential aid.

“The project of the Soup Kitchen OFM – Valletta touched thousands of families. It is a beacon of European solidarity among citizens which shows a commitment to the fight against poverty, in favour of social justice, and which keeps human dignity first,” Casa wrote in a congratulatory Facebook post.

The ceremony will take place on 8th September at 7.00pm and a reception will follow till 9.00pm.

The prize is open to all member states and the winners from around the EU will be celebrated at the European Parliament in Brussels in the European ceremony on 7th November 2023.

Soup Kitchen OFM Valletta goes beyond providing food, they also serve up a range of programs to “nourish the soul as well as the body”.

Such programs include reading, meditation, music, and more as means to provide”much-needed reprieve from the everyday stresses that come with being food insecure or homeless”.

In order to do this, the team works tirelessly to provide healthy and comforting meals to those in need. And to do this, they require donations.
