After Horse Butty In St Paul’s, It’s Time For Ass Burgers In San Ġwann
Having written about a Sicilian food truck serving horse meat panini, it was brought to my attention that another noteworthy Sicilian eatery in San Ġwann is tendering even more exotic offerings.
Before we get into it, don’t forget you can now even book your next dining experience at select eateries on Lovin Restaurants via Bookia. Find restaurants just like this and more on Lovin Malta’s awesome food directory Lovin Restaurants.
Needless to say, I was intrigued, as I particularly like to sample food from different cultures that I have never tried before.
I made my way to Penzalapanza, a prefab shack next to the swings close to San Ġwann church, sat down and asked for the menu. Scanning menus is one of my beloved hobbies, even when, as in this case, I already know what I’ll be having.
“Un’ Asina per favore. No make that a special, with two patties please,” I told the smiling lady.
“And a Moretti,” to keep it authentic.
I know it may sounds controversial, but according to Web MD:
“Donkey meat has proven leaner and more tender than other conventional meat products. It also has a lower saturated fatty acid composition and higher polyunsaturated fatty acid content.”
“The nutritional characteristics of donkey meat make it a great option for health-conscious meat-lovers.”
And guess what – it was one of the best burgers I ever tasted. Deeply tender, really juicy, just amazing.
I ate slowly, savouring all the flavours, the cacciacavallo cheese, donkey mortadella, fried egg and those delicious patties. Yummy.
I chatted a bit with them, learned how they came from Ragusa and worked from a kiosk next to Paul and Rocco, until they graduated to a more stable location.
I commented that they missed the horrific incident there when Jeremie Camilleri ran over Pelin Kaya next to where their old kiosk used to be.
She said that she often wondered what would have happened had they been there at that time. He could have taken out the whole kiosk with her family with his big car.
“Era pazzo di legare!”
I had a limoncello and went home satisfied. I’m sure I’ll be back. I have a lot of respect for Sicilians when it comes to food.
Will you take someone for a date at Penzalapanza?
