Bao buns are fluffy, pillowy, cloud-like steamed buns filled with succulent meats and Asian condiments.

They’re a typical street food dish in China and Taiwan (where they’re called Taiwanese burgers). And these seven places in Malta are where you can find some of the best bao buns this side of the Mediterranean.

YUGTO are known for their delicious bao offerings. The filling options include confit duck, pork belly, veg and crispy chicken.

2. Bahn Mi Viet Street Food Truck, Swatar

If you’re lucky enough to be near this Vietnamese street food truck, make sure you get their bao buns. Choose between pork, chicken, egg or mushroom and eggplant. Tasty as hell, and they’ll only set you back €2!

3. Nori at The Villa, St Julian’s

Enjoy bao buns with a stunning view. Filling options include pulled pork char sui, confit tuna kimchi, chicken peanut mantou and beef with oyster sauce.

4. Hammett’s Gastro Bar, Sliema

Hammett’s creative mushroom bao buns are filled with with shiitake mushrooms, spring onions, mushroom powder, tausi beans and served with chilli sweet soy!

5. Sesame, Valletta

This dumpling & noodle right outside Valletta’s Suq tal-Belt offers bao buns stuffed with tofu or braised beef. Perfect for when you want to indulge in the capital.

6. Bongo Nyah, Marsascala

The south has some serious bao offerings.

Here, you’ll find steamed buns with pork, hoisin sauce & coriander.

7. Zest Street Food, Valletta

Choose between pork belly bao (cucumber, crispy onions and hoisin), chicken bao (ginger, garlic, chillies, oyster sauce, spring onions, fresh coriander and roasted peanuts) or the pan choy with Asian mushrooms (oyster and shiitake mushrooms and miso).
