Check Your Popcorn Packets Aren’t Pesticide Flavoured Before Your Next Movie Night
An official notice issued by the Environmental Health Directorate has warned consumers not to eat popcorn from four batches of Snack Day’s products.
You may have thought that the most action-packed thing you were likely to experience on movie night would be Chris Pratt ducking and diving away from blows delivered by some CGI beast – but if you’re a fan of microwave popcorn, you may have cause to think again.
According to a European Parliament Food Safety Act, several batches of Snack Day Microwave Salted Popcorn are not to be consumed, as a result of potential contamination with trace amounts of Chlorpyrifos – detected in the corn ingredient.
Chlorpyrifos is a pesticide commonly used to kill pests on crops, animals and buildings.
The World Health Organisation considers this pesticide to be moderately hazardous to humans and – in doses larger than those present in a single packet of popcorn – has been linked to neurological damage, developmental disorders and the onset of autoimmune disorders.
It must be clearly asserted that Chlorpyrifos was detected in residue amounts in just four batches of Snack Day Microwave Salted Popcorn – identifiable by best before dates 05/12/2024, 07/12/2024, 21/12/2024 and 23/12/2024.
Given that the EU banned the pesticide outright in 2020 – and has listed it as a persistent organic pollutant to be eliminated – these detections are of fairly significant concern.
Batch numbers 22338, 22340, 22354 and 22356 were detected with Chlorpyrifos in the corn ingredient.
