Don’t Panic: The Price Of Pastizzi Might Be About To Go Up
Load up on phyllo pastry, ricotta and mushy peas: a popular pastizzeria in Valletta just put up a sign informing the world of an incoming price change, and it ain’t pretty.
Champ Pastizzeria, located just off Castille Square, has announced they’ll be raising the price of the simple pastizzi to 40c from its current price of 30c. The 33% price raise comes in the same month that the price of a loaf of Maltese bread was raised by 24c due to a rise in the international price of wheat.
However, this might just be a regional thing
Lovin Malta spoke to a popular pastizzeria in Malta about whether they would be raising the prices of their pastizzi. Saying they were still priced at 30c at their locations – and pointing out some places still charge as low as 25c – they said the location of the shop may have contributed to the price raise.
“Everyone can sell any item at any price they like – when I said we charge 30c I meant for our brand’s shops only. But you know, everyone has his expenses, and in Valletta sometimes even a bottle of water can go for €1,” the representative said.
When asked if he believed the price of pastizzi could be raised in the future, he didn’t deny it.
“It can raise – they are already selling pastizzi for over €1 at Is-Suq tal-Belt,” he ended.
