Anyone who has spent time in Holland knows the glorious concoction that is the stroopwafel. One part wafel, one part gooey caramel filling, all parts awesome, this favourite Dutch treat is best served over a steaming hot mug of Belgian chocolate inside of an Amsterdam coffeeshop.

Luckily for Maltese stroop-lovers, you will no longer need to crave the rare Dutch treats since Strü is about to open up and change the way you sort out your munchies.

“It’s important to bring something like this to Malta that is more based around the quality and technique of the ingredients rather than just a pile of endless chocolate and sugar. They are perfect to carry with you anywhere you go either be as a snack, dessert or breakfast.. it’s an all rounder,” said Wayne Works, the founder of Strü.

Wayne fell in love with stroopwafels and wanted to bring them to Malta

“My first experience with stroopwafels came when visiting the beautiful city of Amsterdam,” said Wayne. “I was walking in one of their amazing food markets when I saw a food truck swarmed by people… I remember the smell was heavenly and I really wanted to see what the fuss was all about. I ordered the first one and instantly I was addicted – the freshly made hot dough with a warm oozing caramel filling, I just had to order a second and a third one for later,” he laughed.

“I have a couple of friends who are Dutch and I really wanted to know the Dutch root secrets to making this perfect little treat. I got them to ask their mothers and grandmothers for their secret recipes which led me to creating my own versions after many experiments on what works best,” he said.

“The whole idea of Strü is to create moments for our customers,” said Wayne. “The place is an open ground to be yourself and let your creative side out, from the first bite to the last, and we have something for everyone on our menu.”

“We are looking to open in the next three months or so. However, we are premiering our stroopwafels on July 19th to the 22nd at the Malta International Food Festival in Mdina,” he said.
