Malta Public Transport (MPT) has introduced a new feature that will make traveling around the island a lot less hectic: QR codes that give you real-time updates on your journey.

This highly anticipated development is part of MPT’s investment in technology to improve punctuality and accessibility, and it will be implemented in all 2,000 bus stops in Malta and Gozo.

MPT explained that while each bus stop provides the estimated time of arrival, the QR code will be a lot more accurate as it will give passengers real-time updates about their buses distance from the stop.

This is all thanks to the use of GPS technology through which every bus transmits its current location every 30 seconds to the central system. This location is then sent to the QR codes on each of the 2,000 bus stops around Malta and Gozo, as well as the Tallinja App, to ensure that the arrival times are reliable and frequently updated.

The Tallinja App, which has been downloaded over 320,000 times, already shows the estimated arrival times. However, since the app is used by an estimated 47.9% of total unique bus passengers each month, the QR code offers this essential information to those who may not have jumped on the app’s bandwagon just yet.

“Now in its sixth year of operations, the Tallinja App continues to be a convenient way for passengers to receive real-time information about the bus service. It also allows people can plan their journeys by indicating the closest bus stop to each user,” MPT explained.

The app also comes with extra benefits, allowing users to check their card balance, top-up their card, and track their trips.
