Green tea is great, especially for those of us not wanting to ride the iced coffee train all the way to the toilet every five minutes in the summer.

Not only is it packed full of antioxidants, it’s also pretty tasty and the possibilities for its uses are endless.

Did you know you that once you’ve drunk the tea that’s brewed, you can use the remaining leaves as a garnish for salads? Loose, used leaves can also be fried as a deodoriser during the damp winter months and can be stowed away one fridge shelves or behind your shoes in the closet.

Tea leaves can also be used for cleaning floors and surfaces and preventing rust in your cooking pots.

Green tea leaves can also be used as a mouthwash, thanks to their anti-bacterial factors – you can even use a tea-soaked cloth to wipe a baby’s bare bottom. Or you can just scoop the leaves into the plants that (should) line your windowsill as a fertiliser.

“But where can I get my own tea from in Malta?”

Simple, from J-okini. The passion project of Sumie Nakamura – a Japanese national who moved from her hometown of Kyoto to Malta back in 1999.

Sumie imports a number of authentic Japanese products, like Kimono wallets and bento boxes and fancily fabulous bento box wraps that can double as a scarf once you’ve finished your egg rolls.

As well as a number of traditionally niche items, like rice molds and artisanal jewellery from the East Asian islands, you’ll also find a whole range of fabulously healthy loose-leaf teas and matcha powders on sale through Sumie’s website.

But, if you’re still on the fence about what green tea and matcha can do for you, then just feast your eyes on these glorious photos.

Yas veganism, yas healthy, yas mango. This is a rice milk jelly made with agar, a derivative from algae that has zero calories and is also gluten-free. You’re welcome.

Why not whip up some Matcha cheesecake semifreddo cups?

Or sprinkle some leaves over a healthy lunch to kickstart that fiber dosage.

Matcha powder can also be added to things like beer or other spirits to impart the flavours into a cocktail mix and leftover green tea also makes for a great face mask.

Or just go for the usual pot of tea, be a simpleton – we won’t judge.

The great thing about these teas? Not only can you drink them hot or cold, but you can also brew them at the temperature of your choice too.

The added benefits of a cold-brewed tea aren’t that different to a hot-brewed cuppa, but you will get a smoother flavour as the cold water draws out less tannins – the same stuff that makes wine bitter.

Hey, you can even use the matcha powder to flavour ice cream!

Because ice cream is a year-round thing, whether you like it or not.
