Ħamrun’s Blossoming Food Scene Is A Total Revolution And These Nine Places Are Why

Article Featured Image

Five to 10 years ago, the main selling point of ?amrun was probably the feast of Saint Gaetan and the ?amrun Kiosk (which we still love, don’t get us wrong). But as the years have passed, Valletta’s neighbour has become quite the destination for foodies… and we’re all here for it.

The blossoming food scene over the past two years is proof that you should never underestimate the underdog.

Here’s a list of our favourite eateries in ?amrun (old and new) that have put this area well on the map among local foodies!

In no particular order:

1. Afghan Natural Food

This place never fails to impress. We wrote about them back when they first opened and they’ve become a local fave since. Their no fuss menu specialises in ethnic food, with a speciality of cuisine from Afghanistan.

Highlights include their lamb kebabs, curries and their Tandoori chicken legs.

2. Bandit

Ahh, these guys are brand spanking new and have taken the burger game in Malta to the next level.

Their gourmet burgers and hot dogs are legit and they’re always pushing boundaries. Where else are you going to find a peanut butter and jam burger or a burger with doughnuts as buns?

3. Baba Ganoush

Flying the flag for authentic Middle Eastern food, Baba Ganoush will leave you wanting more. The menu includes cold mezes (such as tabouleh, baba ganoush and hummus), warm mezes and hefty mains such as rice dishes, grilled meat platters and tons of kebab options.

Expect perfectly seasoned meats.

4. Pulcinella

Definitely one of our favourite pizzerias on the island. Here you can find legit Neapolitan pizzas that will impress even the biggest (and most Italian) pizza snob.

If that wasn’t enough, they have all-you-can-eat pizza nights every Wednesday. Yes, really!

5. Cafe’ Elia

They’ve been in the game for 60 years and are still a go-to spot for the ?amrun locals and visitors. This cafe serves fancy cakes, pastries pies, sandwiches, wraps, pizzas, pastas and more.

To be as popular now as they were half a decade ago, they must be doing something right.

6. The Journey

These guys serve gourmet burgers drawing inspiration from across the globe. That and they specialise in exotic meats.

Crocodile, zebra, horse meat burgers anyone?

7. C&M Borg

This shop is a coffee lover’s paradise.

They’re known for being a leading company that imports and manufactures raw coffees, and they ground their coffee daily.

8. Cafe De Republic

Freshly-prepared sandwiches, toasties, pizzas, salads, pasta dishes and steaks. Humble food and generous portions!

9. Wasp.

Every Thursday, this shabby chic wine bar hosts aperitivo nights which involve really generous cold cuts and cheese platters.

You’ll definitely love the good vibes!
