If there’s one thing that brings people together, it’s good food – and Malta has a lot to offer when it comes to good food.

From new restaurants opening up in quiet corners of the island to traditional classics keeping their game at the highest level, here are the best restaurants in Malta according to top Maltese personalities.

1. Patakka, Valletta

Ian Borg and Cyrus Engerer

Cyrus Engerer – “Patakka in Valletta reminds me of some of the best restaurants in mainland Europe with a Maltese touch. I love the attention to detail that is found in their dishes and the fact that their menu changes according to season. Their pasta with Ricotta, Orange Zest and Octopus as well as their Rabbit Liver Parfait are to die for. Above all else, the fact that the staff remember what wine you like to drink from your first visit to the second, and which your favourite dishes were, simply is the cherry on the cake. Oh, forget cherries on cakes, their Banana and caramel dessert is delish!”

2. Il-Gabbiano, Gozo

Sarah Zerafa

“This was a very hard question to answer. But I have to go with Il-Gabbiano in Gozo. Top notch food with the best view!”

3. Dr Juice, Gżira

Ben Camille

“Super healthy food which tastes great!”

4. Beati Pauli and Giannini, Valletta, and La Favorita, Marsascala

Chris Fearne

“Beati Pauli in Valletta – somehow I’ve got a feeling I shouldn’t be giving this away!! I also love Gianini in Valletta and La Favorita in Marsascala.”

5. Kings Own Band Club, Valletta

Gaia Cauchi

6. San Giuliano, St Julians

Francis Zammit Dimech

“The quality of the food remains consistent and impeccable. That is apart from the warmth and good cheer of the staff, not least Marlene.”

7. Il-Mitħna, Mellieħa, and Ali Baba, Gżira

Rosianne Cutajar

“Can I choose two?”

8. Wigi’s Kitchen, St Julians

David Casa

9. Salt, Buġibba

Miriam Dalli

10. Tal-Kaptan, Qawra

Alex Alden

“It’s super
cosy and lovely by the sea: they have these pistachio encrusted ġbejniet which are delicious!”

11. Crust

Ira Losco

“Well, this is awkward…”

12. Sunday in Scotland, Valletta

Jo Caruana

“Not quite a restaurant but a stunning café concept: Sunday in Scotland in Valletta. Their Le Flan is AMAZING. I also love the Villa Corinthia, as I’m always impressed by the high-end vegan and veggie options dreamt up by the team there.”

13. The Pulled Meat Factory

Eve Borg Bonello

“The house dawg is amazing!”

Il-Kartell, Universal Sports Bar and Grill, and Il-Qbajjar, Gozo

Michela Pace

14. One80 Kitchen and Lounge

Chris Cardona

15. Emma’s Kitchen, San Gwann and Pierre’s, Marsalforn

Roberta Metsola

Bonus: His driver Gorg

Adrian Delia

“This is unfair as I’ve visited so many good restaurants and have been treated so kindly that it would be a tough call on all if I had to single out… so I’d say the Lampuki pie baked by my own driver Gorg must take the biscuit.”
