Malta’s capital city has been a Mediterranean hub for centuries now. Through its turbulent history, it’s managed to amass a unique collection of sights and sounds that really merit this year’s European Capital of Culture crown. If there’s one thing that’s as abundant in Valletta as its history, though, it’s food. Which is why a new tour to hit the streets of the capital city wants to integrate both.

The aptly named Valletta Food Tour offers visitors, in its own words, the opportunity to tour Malta’s historic and multi-cultural capital with a different focus; local and international food off the beaten track.

It’s being organised by Offbeat Malta Food Trails, the latest venture by The Definitive(ly) Food Guide Co. And if that name’s familiar, it’s because those are the people behind the annual awards which see eateries all across Malta and Gozo being crowned as the cream of the crop. 18 years after first publishing the country’s number Restaurant Guide, they want to take people out into the streets of Valletta to taste some of the best food the capital has to offer.

The real star of the show

“We are extremely excited to launch these walks as they offer food lovers the opportunity to discover Malta’s capital city as European Capital of Culture for 2018,” managing director Lisa Grech told Lovin Malta. “The city has in the last few years taken on a new life and vibrance in particular in the culinary field. This is a perfect walk for anyone wishing to explore the city while tasting delicious food and drinks along the way”.

The tours just last three hours, and are led by an experienced, fully-licensed guide. There are six planned stops, all with different food tastings that come included with the price. There’s everything from tapas to chocolates, from the artisanal ftira to local craft beers and wines. And of course, what would a Maltese food tour be without pastizzi.
