Malta, Meet Your New Pastizz: Maltese Sausage, Sundried Tomatoes And Ġbejna Cheesecakes Are Officially Happening

Last week, we asked what new flavour of pastizzi you wanted to see, and you, the people of Malta, have overwhelmingly shouted: “give us Maltese sausage, sundried tomato, and ġbejna pastizzi, or give us death”.

When Sphinx Pastizzeria asked the public to help them come up with a new flavour for the Pastizz of the Summer, ideas started flying everywhere.

Do we want a mojito pastizz? A timpana or mac and cheese pastizz? A pizza pastizz!?

It’s not that we don’t love the ricotta and peas flavours anymore… it’s just that we’ve changed as a nation, as a people, that’s all. I know, it hurts, but in a good way.

So six potential new flavours were decided upon for Sphinx’s first foray into a lighter, summer snack: pistachio pastizz, pina colada (pineapple and coconut, sans alcohol), Pink Lamington pastizz, banoffee pastizz, tuna pastizz, and Maltese sausage pastizz.

In a public test-taste in the streets of Valletta, the six flavours were rated down to two flavours: pistachio and Maltese sausage.

And in a landslide victory via Lovin Malta’s Facebook poll last week, Maltese sausage pastizzi won with a resounding 73% of the vote, with pistachio getting just 23% of the vote. A total of 3,700 people voted in the poll.

“This was the most difficult food decision I ever had to take” – an actual quote from one of the voters

Now that we have a winner, get ready for a whole new flavour of pastizz to be available for a limited time only all over the island.

The original new Sphinx pastizzi – which, FYI, are made using margarine and not animal lard like in the old days – will be available at Sphinx Pastizzeria outlets all over the island.

The Maltese Sausage Pastizz with sundried tomatoes and gbejna will be available from all Sphinx and Champ outlets from Tuesday, 20th August!

And for anyone who was hoping for pistachio or any of the other flavours to win: if you ask the guys over at Sphinx really nicely, you might be able to convince them to produce them as well – they do seem like pretty chill guys, after all.
