Maltese Ġbejna Finally Gets EU Protection After Years Of Negotiations

Maltese sheep’s milk cheeselets, locally known as Ġbejna tan-Nagħaġ, has officially received protection status by the European Union after years of “intense negotiations”.
European Parliament (EP) President Roberta Metsola announced the news this morning, calling it an “important achievement for Maltese and Gozitan farmers”.
“For the first time, after many years of intense discussions and negotiations, a Maltese food product has been included on the same list as international food products like Italy’s Parmigiano Reggiano and Greece’s Feta cheese,” Metsola wrote on social media.
This means that not only will we, the Maltese and Gozitans, be protecting and promoting ġbejna among foreigners and tourists, but Europe itself will advertise this Maltese product as an artisanal and regional delicacy—unique in the world.
“A heartfelt thank you to everyone—activists, farmers—who worked together to achieve this result. This is how we can continue to protect our Maltese and Gozitan heritage and traditions. This is how we make success out of the European Union.”
