New Food Market In Malta Gets Seven-Time Michelin Star Winner’s Blessing
A new, Italian food market offering artisan high quality Italian products at reasonable prices has just opened in Malta, and internationally acclaimed chef Bruno Barbieri has flown down to Malta to give this new project, UpperFood, his seal of approval.
Chef Barbieri, who is currently a judge on Italy’s Master Chef and has racked up an impressive seven Michelin star awards, is excited for the project to “give a platform to all those small local Italian producers to showcase their artisan products in Malta where the people understand and appreciate our food”.
“I love it for a number of reasons starting with the climate, the sea, and the proximity to Italy and how easily you connect to other European countries,” explained chef Barbieri, when asked what draws him to Malta.
“I think of Malta as a country where a foreigner can easily establish a good social life, where bureaucracy doesn’t stifle creativity and where a determination to succeed is encouraged I feel a good strong positive energy here.”
The Upper Food concept was created by two Italian entrepreneurs, Giovanni Dato and Fabrizio Crimi, who have both based their lives in Malta. Their goal was simple, to bring back that small food store which was a quintessential part of any village core while providing artisan high quality Italian products at reasonable prices and in season.
Giovanni and Fabrizio have set out to offer the Maltese an Italian culinary experience that is simply authentic, playing on the nostalgic sense of the local bottegha style village store.
