Northern Star: Five Unmissable Restaurants In Beautiful Mellieħa

Mellieħa is Malta’s Northernmost large town before you get to Gozo. With its majestic church overlooking the pretty Mellieħa Bay, the largest sandy beach in Malta, Mellieħa borders St Paul’s Bay, Mġarr and Marfa.
Because of its scenic beauty and long coast, Mellieħa is a very popular summer holiday destination with tourists and locals alike – and best of all, there are a number of restaurants to cater for all kinds of tastes and budgets.

Here are five of our Mellieħa favs, in no particular order.
1. One80 Kitchen & Lounge
I discovered this place quite recently and it turned out to be a great find. Situated halfway between the town and the bay it enjoys sweeping views from the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieħa to Mellieħa Bay.

The food was excellent and so was the service, with attention to small details that make the place stand out. My linguine crab was delightful.
Despite the proximity to the main road there was a pleasant peaceful ambience and the spacious terrace is pet friendly as well.
2. Commando
Nestled within a tastefully-restored 300-year-old building, Commando boasts a proud culinary tradition dating back to the wartime 1930’s.
In 2023 Commando was awarded by the Michelin Guide with a Bib Gourmand for the fourth year running, making it one of just five restaurants in the Maltese Islands to hold this distinction.
To be considered for a Bib Gourmand, Michelin inspectors seek out restaurants that offer an exceptional quality of food at a more approachable price point. Since 1997, “good quality, good value restaurants” have been highlighted using the Bib Gourmand award.
3. Thai Thai
If you’re feeling like something different from the usual Mediterranean fayre, Thai food makes a refreshing change, a sweet shock to the senses. I have to say I have a soft spot for this cuisine.
4. Munchies
This time tested seaside eatery right by the seaside of the fabulous Mellieħa Bay is reliably consistent in dishing out quality food both at the beachside restaurant and the smarter upstairs venue.
5. Rebekah’s Restaurant
This former farmstead is over 200 years old and boasts thick walls of golden Maltese rock. Prime local produce and luxury imported ingredients are used to create modern, hearty dishes with bold Mediterranean flavours. Service is overseen by the proud chef-owner; ask for a table in the central courtyard.
A proud Michelin Plate recipient.
