The future of the Scotsman Pub, one of the most famous pubs in St Julian’s, is up in the air after its proprietors decided to call it a day.

Renowned for its fish and chips, the Scotsman Pub opened its doors in 1987, changed hands a few times, and was leased out to Julie and David Clifford in 2008. However, the ten-year lease has now come to an end and the couple has decided to retire.

“Dave and I would like to thank each and every one of you who walked into this pub and helped make this journey a success,” Julie wrote. “I also would like to thank our families, friends and agents, and of course all our employees. It has been a pleasure meeting old friends and making new ones, from near and far. We’ve had our ups and downs, arguments, laughs and many good times. Alas, everything comes to an end and it is time to reap what we sowed and enjoy life.”

The building is owned by the Farsons Brewery, which will now have to decide whether to lease it out to another pub proprietor or use it for other purposes.

Patricia Graham, one of Malta’s leading tenant activists, said the pub’s landlords had raised the rent of the Scotsman Pub to six time the price it had originally been leased out to the Cliffords in 2008.

“The greed of landlords has closed down an iconic pub in St Julian’s,” she wrote on Facebook. “Good luck to the landlord renting this space!”

Contacted by Lovin Malta, Julie Clifford confirmed the rent had increased but declined to say by how much. However, she confirmed she and her husband were planning to retire regardless.
