Review: Eat Fine Fish Right At The Water’s Edge, Maybe Even Watch Some Dolphins At New St Paul’s Resto
I’m a sucker when it comes to seafood restaurants that lie on the water’s edge. I could never understand why we didn’t have the amount of restaurants they have in Sicily on the coast, all selling their lovely, seafood based, dishes. If you live on an island it should be the only way to go.
So when I spotted that a new restaurant, Ostrica Nera, had opened on the grounds of the perennial Gillieru Hotel in St Paul’s Bay, I immediately wanted to try it out as soon as.
Meeting with a friend who was also hungry last Sunday presented me with the perfect opportunity. While we waited for the table to be set we studied the dazzling array of very fresh looking fish.
Ċippullaz, Pesce San Pietro, Barracuda, Red Snapper and its cousin Bazuga and the wild Sea Bass. Next to the blue Mediterranean sea. Heaven!
The menu is very interesting. Though more focused on seafood the meat dishes coming out looked divine. Especially my neighbour’s Tomahawk Steak.
I was here for the fish though. There is a great selection of crudi. Rossi Prawns, Swordfish Ceviche in Apple, Tartare, yum! And great antipasto. Fried neonati and the Ceviche won the poll but I’ll be back for more.

The wild Seabass al Sale was a great choice as the salt stops the fish from drying out. It was perfectly cooked and totally succulent.
As I was staring in space, trapped in the throes of a food coma, I noticed that dozens of people were milling around us, all looking out at sea. I asked this boy who was seriously snapping photos from his phone what was happening.
“Dolphins” he said. “They were just over there.”
I scanned the sea but couldn’t see anything. How could I have missed them? Was it a conspiracy? Did everyone just pretend to see dolphins? Or did the extremely lovely Palio wine have me at a stupor? I was looking that way all the time!
Although I love dolphins I decided not to make a big thing out of it and ordered a Lemon Sorbet with Vodka to appease my disappointment. It worked! The sorbet was excellent and it worked very well with the vodka.
A perfect Sunday lunch in fact.
