Thank Us Later: Here’s A List Of Maltese Cafeterias For Almost Every Occasion

Do you ever need to go out with your friends, or perhaps on a date, but you have no idea where to go? You would probably end up hanging out at the usual places you generally go to. Well, Malta might be a small island, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t enough awesome places to visit to add some excitement to your life, especially when it comes to cafeterias.

We have compiled a list of cafeterias just for when you have no idea where to go (organised according to occasion), which is probably something that happens to you weekly. Thank us later hi.

1. Catch up with your friends

Coffee Circus is definitely one of the best coffee places on the island. Anyone who is a true coffee lover should be sitting on one of their pretty chairs drinking a cappuccino and looking out towards the sea. When summer is here and coffee is on your mind, try the iced lattes — pure heaven.

This place is perfect for an intimate sit-down with your friend to discuss the people you hate behind their backs, and if that isn’t the epitome of Maltese lifestyle, then we don’t know what is.

2. Become royalty for the day

This lush Palazzo garden converted to a coffee shop is a gift to the island. Visiting the Tea Room here is a unique experience — every little detail is well taken care of and the large variety of teas will leave you wanting to order everything at hand.

The tiered food stands are just too much to handle, the pastries, the cakes, and oh my god the scones. This is the place to go to if you want to feel like a Queen. Just go there, please.

3. Tea with the matriarchy

Molly’s is a cosy and cute cafeteria in Mosta perfect to pig out on sweet treats and catch up with your mother and nanna simultaneously.

They offer a variety of homemade treats made with as much love and care, you’d think angels made them.  The most amazing but not over the top pancakes in the country and the one of the few proper pavlovas. The food at Molly’s is also amazing, but with the pancakes and salted caramel pretzel shakes on offer, you’d be forgiven into jumping straight to dessert instead.

4. Have a proper date

Mint is a good place to take your chill date to, this New Zealand style cafe with a seafront view offers great food and great coffee. They offer a range of cuisines from Thai to Moroccan and have endless options of grains, legumes, salads and pulses. How can we not love this place?

Mint caters for special diets too — from lactose intolerance to coeliac and offers a great choice of amazing vegan and vegetarian foods which will leave you spoilt for choice.

5. A heavenly midday snack

This tiny cafe in Birkirkara might not have some seaside terrace, but sacrificing the views in return for the out-of-this-world food is worth it. Sicilia Mia is a great cafeteria to stop for a quick mid-day break, they offer delicious authentic Sicilian treats and even make their own chocolate sculptures — you can eat a chocolate Madonna and baby Jesus during Christmas time, no we’re not joking.

Walking into this shop will make you hate yourself for not having enough stomach space to taste everything on display. They also offer savoury food, but who needs that when you can have a homemade Zuccotto?

6. Curb your monstrous munchies

Stazzjon is the place to be at if you have a severe case of the munchies. This old school cafe serves wholesome food with an innovative twist. The burgers are ginormous but eating them does not result in the usual catastrophic disaster of having your burger fall apart halfway to your mouth.

Vegetarians rejoice: Stazzjon offers great vegetarian options. The chickpea patties will make you want to marry the chef and their quinoa burger is the holy grail of burgers.

The hot chocolate is proper, real melted actual chocolate; swear to God this place is heaven. The milkshakes are just perfect, they are not too filling and neither too sweet — they are made just the way milkshakes should be made.

Try the pan cake. No, not the pancake, the pan cake. It’s literally a pan with a freshly baked cake in it, served with the toppings of your choice. You get a list of toppings and flavours to add to your cake and it’s cooked for you right there and then.

7. Get your afternoon lunch break

This Cafe in Msida could be easily overlooked as one would not normally be found strolling down Valley Road looking for a good snack. This gem however is worth a visit for a hearty lunch break. Their food is served in well sized portions and the recipes are very well thought and original. Have you ever eaten a Matcha risotto? You could also go to Stanjata for some godly avocado on toast and poached eggs — who doesn’t want to have that for breakfast? Nobody that’s who.

Stanjata also offers freshly-squeezed juices and uncommon desserts. You’re welcome.

8. Your caffeine fix satisfied, even if you’re on the go

Kefakafe is where all coffee addicts should hang out in their free time. The place is fairly small but thank god you can get your coffee to go. They offer specialty coffees like Malta has never seen before, and each week they change their coffee specials. These people will give you Vietnamese coffee, Macha latte, Moroccan mint tea and real Mocha — no questions asked. Do we seriously need to tell you more? Do yourself a favour and visit KefaKafe as soon as possible.

9. Lunch with friends

Cafe Rouge is situated at the Bormla Waterfront, right in front of the docks and is actually a great place to go to if you want to have a nice lunch with your friends. The place has a warm vibe to it and happy hour there stretches out for way over five hours, from 10am till 8pm. Daily. Yes, 10 hours of happy hour every day.

If you don’t really fancy cocktails but want to eat a great juicy burger or a home made gourmet pie, please, by all means go to Cafe Rouge.
