Maltese summers are hot AF, but the good thing is there’s an endless list of mouth-watering ice creams to choose from. And while we’ll be the first to admit you’ll be hard pressed to find an ice cream which isn’t delicious, we’re not going to pretend like there isn’t a serious ice-cream hierarchy out there.

Here are the best ice-creams you can find this summer in Malta, ranked from good to godly.

7. Slush Puppies

Look, everybody loves a Slush Puppie every know and then. They’re amazing. They’re also great to get at the cinema. But if you’re at the beach and someone brings up ice cream, is it really the first thing you think of? We didn’t think so.

6. Fruity Solero

With names like Exotic and Berry Explosion, these are perfect for anyone who’d like to experiment with their flavours and different consistencies. They also added a “healthy” twist which gave them an added edge over the usual vanilla / chocolate variations with some people. An honourable attempt at disrupting the status quo, but still not nearly enough to topple the giants.

5. The Magnums

The BMWs of ice cream. They might be more expensive than their counterparts, but you sure as hell feel amazing buying one of these babies. Bonus points to the Double Chocolate Hazelnut Ice Cream Bar, because even just reading that name is enough to have us daydreaming.

4. Calippo 

(Cola, because duh)

Calippo have a wide variety of ice lolly flavours, but everyone knows the Cola flavour is where it’s at. It’s exactly what it sounds like; a frozen stick of Cola. What’s not to love?!

The only shame is that the flavour tends to dissipate after a couple of licks, crushing all your hopes and dreams in the process

3. Ġelat tal-Magna

The poster-child of simpler is better. Forget your fancy brands and beautiful packaging, and give us some good old delicious ice cream, straight from the machine on the van.

2. Maxibon

The classic Italian ad for this beauty claimed that two tastes are better than one, and they couldn’t have been more right. 50% vanilla ice cream with chocolate chips and a biscuit sandwich, 50% hazelnut pieces in a hard chocolate shell, 100% heavenly, these are the go-to for thousands of Maltese for a very good reason. Two very good reasons, actually.

1. The Cornetto Classic

The legend itself. A staple of every child, teenager, or adult’s summer ice-cream rotation. Old habits die hard, and this icon isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
