The South Of Malta Is Forgotten: Our Food Delivery Options Make Us Miserable

Article Featured Image

Sometimes, you just don’t feel like cooking. Every single movement your body makes feels like extreme effort and you just want to plop your body down on the sofa and get food delivered to your home.

If you live in the south of Malta and feel like eating something a little special, we’ve got bad news for you.

People who live in the south of the island have less choice than the rest of the island when it comes to choosing a suitable dinner, and that’s just the tip of the disappointing iceberg.

1. We practically cannot ever eat sushi at home

Southies need to get out of the house if they feel like, say, sushi. The only two restaurants which deliver sushi to the south of Malta are in the Paceville/Sliema area, which makes the whole experience feel a bit dodgy.

They’re great restaurants, don’t get me wrong. However, it takes over half an hour for the delivery to get there, and on certain delivery websites it even states that the delivery time is round about 90 minutes. And I’m sorry, but I do not feel safe ordering sushi that’ll take nearly two hours to get to my house.

What really irks me off though that there totally are sushi restaurants in the south, and extremely good ones at that. The only snag is that they do not deliver.

2. There’s a number of Chinese restaurants… but almost none of them deliver

While we do have a ton of amazing Chinese restaurants down south, only a couple deliver, and again, most of them in the north. Which is a proper shame for all of those who need their sesame prawns on toast fix.

Do you know how soggy that crispy beef gets by the time it makes its way to Għaxaq?

Other locations in the south literally get zero Chinese deliveries in their town, leaving them stuck with the nightmare inducing pizza/pasta/grill options only.

Why are you doing this to us?

3. Some have it better than others

While most of the south doesn’t get a choice in food, other southern towns are blessed with the amazing Sesame dim sum bar. This blessing however does not deliver to certain towns in the south.

For example, they deliver in the Cottonera area, but not in Paola and Żejtun.

Sometimes we get crippling bao bun cravings. Please, help.

4. Our choices make us sad most of the time

The main choice of food you get in the south are fried chicken, pizza, pasta and grill. If you don’t feel like guzzling down gluten, you will just have to go hungry or order the dreaded gluten free pasta nobody likes.

Up until recently, we were the equivalent of Mordor food-wise. Thank God Amigos opened in Żabbar for all of us who were literally starving themselves to death for not wanting any more pizza.

5. Nothing remotely Eastern is realistically available

Fine, the kebab houses are ample and so are Lebanese and Indian restaurants, again; none. of. them. deliver.

The only handful of places which deliver Eastern delicacies to the south are situated in the Sliema and Rabat area. Waiting that long for food to be delivered will give me extreme bouts of ‘Is my food forgotten?’ anxiety. And when it does arrive, you bet I’m going to be looking at that plastic pot of tikka masala with a suspicious eye or two.

6. The choices for different foods mainly come from the North

And that’s very problematic. For someone who fears food poisoning more than the plague, getting food delivered from up north is a proper nightmare.

Ordering food during summer is a mentally crippling affair, what if it gets żibel with the heat? What if it takes too long to get to the dark side? Why is there a minimum delivery quota of €80 for sushi?

7. And they still take a long time to deliver

Some places will not only charge expensively for a delivery, but they will also take way over an hour to arrive.

You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do, so you’ll probably just go hungry instead, you cannot face another burger. Instead you will embrace the sweet embrace of hunger-induced death in your living room.

Or just make toast, whatever.
