Digital creators, Caleb & Taylor Kiser have shortlisted the Maltese Ftira as the one of the top 10 foods in Europe travellers must taste.

“This carousel could have included like 100 with some of our favourite finds but here are 10 of our favourite things we think you MUST add to your foodie bucket list,” the digital creators wrote.

The Maltese Ftira is a ring-shaped, flattened sourdough bread in Malta and is a key part of the cultural heritage. It has a thick crust and light internal texture, characterised by open crumbs. Most common ftira toppings include sliced tomatoes, anchovies and/or tuna, capers, olives, ġbejna (local goat cheese) and more.

The Maltese Ftira was even inscribed in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2020.

The creators described the Ftira as “Malta’s rustic, circular bread stuffed with Mediterranean fillings like tuna and tomato. It’s SO light and crispy- unlike any bread we’ve ever had.”

Among the top foods that were shared by the creators, there was Sweden’s Cardamom Buns, Rome’s Ricotta Crostata and Denmark’s Smørrebrød.

How cool for our local foods to be given the international spotlight!

Do you think there are any other Maltese foods which should make the list?
