7 Dishes That Prove Maltese Food Will Always Beat Its English Counterpart

Malta was granted Independence from the United Kingdom 54 years ago, the first step in what eventually led Malta to become a republic close to a decade later. Sure the Brits have left their mark: red telephone boxes, the George Cross, left-hand traffic, and affinity for tea and biscuits.

However one thing’s for sure: Maltese food waves at British food in the rear-view mirror. Here’s seven reasons why Maltese food should thank the Independence Act.

1. Pudina tal-ħobż, take a bow

Mouthwatering and loaded with everything from raisins to chopped nuts (depending on your family recipe), pudina tal-ħobż puts your Tesco muffins to shame.

2. Rabbit: Malta’s delicacy

Roasted, stewed, topped off over a plate of warm pasta or gracing your family dinner as stuffat, cooked rabbit is as quintessentially Maltese as pastizzi. Beats any old stew any day of the week.

3. Savoury pies on fleek…

We see your Shepherd’s pie and raise you ricotta pie, lampuki pie, spinach and tuna pie…

4. … and sweet pies too

Torta ta’ l-intrita a.k.a. almond pie sounds way fancier than cherry pie anyway.

5. Malta rules the Easter game

We’ll give you Christmas, dear Britain, but Easter has Malta’s flag waving high above all other seasonal delicacies. From prinjolati and perlini to kwareżimal and figolli, we’ll promise not to make the Christmas log too jealous.

6. We make killer biscuits too

Bourbon biscuits? Amazing. Devon creams? Save us a few.

But when it really comes down to it the only real winners are Maltese. Ottijiet? Always. Biskuttini tal-lewż? With a serving of te fit-tazza, yes please.

7. Post-bar binge

Cheese-loaded chips? A kebab takeaway? All well and good but don’t even try to come for pastizzi

BONUS: Potatoes in general

This one’s a bonus cos it doesn’t just beat the English; there is no potato like Malta’s potatoes. #TasteTheSunAndChurch
