The Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS) is joining forces with two internationally renowned educational institutions to introduce study programmes focused on Mediterranean culinary excellence, Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg announced.

Through the Mediterranean Gastronomy Educational Partnership, ITS is collaborating with two internationally renowned educational institutions, Institut Lyfe of France and CAST Alimenti of Italy.

The first programme under this collaboration, the Advanced Programme in Mediterranean Gastronomy, will commence this year.

It consists of two semesters, with the first focusing on intensive training in Mediterranean culinary arts, while the second emphasises real-world application to enhance professional skills.

The course is an exclusive programme designed to prepare expert chefs specialising in Mediterranean flavours and techniques. Students will have the unique opportunity to study across all three institutions, gaining hands-on experience in different cultural and culinary settings.

Students will enjoy world-class training, hands-on experience, and exposure to diverse Mediterranean culinary traditions. Through immersive learning across the three institutions, students will refine their skills, engage in cultural exchange, and contribute to the evolution of Mediterranean cuisine on a global scale.

Beyond this programme, ITS, Institut Lyfe, and CAST Alimenti are actively exploring further collaborative opportunities to introduce additional programmes, including those at an advanced academic level.

“Through this collaboration, ITS is solidifying Malta’s position as a centre of excellence in Mediterranean gastronomy. This partnership is more than just an academic collaboration – it is a commitment to fostering talent, enhancing professional opportunities, and promoting Malta as a leading destination for authentic culinary experiences,” Borg said.

ITS CEO, Pierre Fenech, described this as an exciting new chapter for the institution, emphasising that this collaboration is just the beginning, with more developments to come. Fenech also highlighted plans to extend beyond the culinary arts into other sectors within the tourism and hospitality industry.

ITS has been working with Institut Lyfe, formerly known as Institut Paul Bocuse, since 2017, to offer the Bachelor of Culinary Arts programme. This collaboration allows students to spend a semester studying at the prestigious institution in Lyon, France. Now, with the addition of CAST Alimenti, the MGEP initiative is set to expand educational opportunities in Mediterranean gastronomy with other study programmes.

The partnership was launched this morning at one of ITS’ training restaurants in Luqa, in the presence of representatives of the three educational institutions, ITS students and lecturers, and key industry stakeholders.
