Xemxi, Filfli, Buwġi! Maltese Chilli House Promises The Right Balance Of Spice And Flavour

Have you been meaning to add a little bit of spice to your chilli without ending up logging painful post-meal hours? Well, that’s exactly what one Maltese chilli-lover is promising.

Filfla Chilli Co. offers homemade and artisanal chilli chutneys and jams in several different flavours… and it all stems from its founder’s own experiences with spice.

The local chilli house currently offer three flavours: Filfli, a sun-dried tomato, carob syrup and red chilli chutney, Xemxi, an orange, ginger, honey and habanero jam, and Buwġi, an olive, sultana and green chilli tapenade.

The founder Malcolm Ricci explained that hot sauces generally have an adverse effect on his stomach, and so he wanted to create products that were bursting with flavour but that also contained the right balance of flavours, acidity and spiciness – making sure to prevent you from logging all those bathroom hours.

The company does its utmost to source locally and sustainably wherever possible, and always strives to have their products reflect Maltese culture and cuisine – down to the chosen ingredients, which are synonymous with the Maltese islands.

The idea for the company began to blossom during Covid lockdown, when Ricci and his wife found that they had bouts of time on their hands. The pair had been cooking for many years, constantly coming up with sauces and recipes – they’ve also always had a knack for spicy food.

Will you be trying any of Filfla Chilli’s jams or chutneys?
