‘Don’t Cross To Malta Between 5 And 8pm On Sundays’: Gozitans Ferry Chairman’s Statement
Many Gozitans, including PN MP Alex Borg, are reacting to Gozo Channel Chairman Joe Cordina’s statements regarding the excruciatingly long ferry queues from the sister island, particularly on Sundays.
Speaking with Newsbook, Cordina appealed to the public to avoid crossing between Malta and Gozo on Sundays between 5pm and 8pm.
He remarked that the main reason yesterday’s queue was worse than usual was because Gozo Channel is currently operating with three ferries instead of four. The MV Nikolaos is currently inoperative due to ongoing maintenance works.
Individuals queuing for the ferry prior to this specific time bracket told Lovin Malta that they spent more than two hours waiting to get on board.
A man told the newsroom that he tried queuing for the ferry at 3pm for a commitment he had at 8pm. Realising that he wouldn’t be able to make it there on time, given that he wouldn’t have boarded the ferry by at least 7pm, he had to cancel his plans.
Appealing to Minister Clint Camilleri for “some common sense,” Gozitan PN MP took to Facebook to express his concern at Cordina’s statement.
“What will Gozitan workers whose shift begins at 7pm in Malta do?” Borg questioned.
“What about the students whose lectures begin at 8am in Malta on Monday,“ or “those who have hospital appointments?” he added.
“Your incompetence has become an inconvenience to every Gozitan student and worker who has to cross to Malta,” as well as to those from Malta who cross over to Gozo to enjoy some quality time with their family,” Borg continued.
“The taxpayer pays for the Government’s incompetence,” PN MP Adrian Delia remarked below Borg’s status.
“What about those who work a night shift in Malta?” a woman said in relation to Cordina’s statement.
“It is becoming a nightmare every Sunday… even just to drive down to get the ferry on foot or the fast ferry as you are stuck in traffic. Plus, most residents residing close to the ferry are blocked from driving back home etc… and let’s not forget all the businesses in Mġarr; it’s impossible to get to any restaurants or bars. Yet the latest concern is widening the street to Marsalforn due to traffic,” another user wrote.
Meanwhile, Gozo Channel has not posted anything on its social media, and no official statement has been released as of yet. However, its Facebook page has currently limited who can comment on its posts.
