Finally! A New Ferry Should Be Joining The Gozo Channel Permanent Fleet Soon
The Maltese government has finally set plans in motion to secure a fourth ferry for the Gozo Channel, aiming to provide a much-needed boost to the often-congested Malta-Gozo route.
Prime Minister Robert Abela confirmed this development while answering questions during a press conference on the national budget.
He stated that the groundwork is now underway for a new tender that will eventually give Gozo Channel a fourth vessel — ideally one that the company will fully own and control.
The promise of a dedicated fourth ferry is especially significant for Gozitans, who have voiced frustrations over long wait times and crowded crossings, particularly during peak seasons.
The MV Nikolaus, a leased vessel initially introduced as a temporary fix in 2019, has been a source of contention since it was brought in as a short-term solution but has remained in service longer than intended.
The government had previously attempted to tender for a replacement in 2022, but the call failed to attract any bidders due to the specialised nature of the ferry needed for Malta-Gozo crossings.
This latest commitment to secure a fourth ferry marks an important step toward improving the service for both daily commuters and tourists alike.
