Today marks Gozo’s Jum Għawdex, a day dedicated to celebrating the island’s rich history, resilience, and identity.

The celebrations kicked off with a Pontifical Mass at the Gozo Cathedral, led by Bishop Anton Teuma, before a wreath-laying ceremony honoured Archpriest Saver Cassar, the man who led Gozo’s 1798 uprising against French rule.

Jum Għawdex, or Gozo Day, remembers that victory, when Gozitans reclaimed their island on 28 October 1798, a moment still celebrated as a symbol of Gozo’s courage and independence.

This evening, Independence Square in Victoria will host the annual Ġieħ Għawdex Awards Ceremony, organised by the Regional Council of Gozo together with the Ministry for Gozo and Planning and the Circolo Gozitano.

President Myriam Spiteri Debono will personally present this year’s awards to Joe Bajada, recognised for his lifelong contribution to sport and the Gozitan sporting community, and to Rev. Michael Xuereb, honoured for his service and commitment to the people of Gozo.
