The Planning Authority has officially approved the much-debated Gozo Rural Airfield project, a key initiative proposed by the Ministry for Gozo and Planning.

This project aims to enhance connectivity between Malta and Gozo, delivering on an election promise made by the party in government. Minister for Gozo and Planning, Clint Camilleri, emphasised the significance of this development, stating that improving connectivity between the islands has always been a priority.

“The Gozo Rural Airfield was an election promise of the party in government, which recognises that Gozo should continue to be given priority when it comes to connectivity between the islands,” he remarked.

Beyond just providing an air link between Gozo and Malta, the minister highlighted the broader vision of the project.

“We are looking at this project in a holistic way. We’re not only establishing a direct air connection but also creating new economic opportunities for Gozo—opportunities that the island has not yet benefited from,” he explained.

According to Camilleri, these new economic niches align with the Strategy for the Regional Development of Gozo, which has been shaped in collaboration with various stakeholders. The minister also assured that environmental concerns are a top priority for the Gozo Rural Airfield project.

He stressed that extensive mitigation measures will be implemented to minimise both the visual impact and noise pollution generated by the airfield.

The project aims to strike a balance between progress and preserving Gozo’s natural beauty.

In line with this commitment, Camilleri confirmed that no new agricultural or untouched land will be used for the airfield’s expansion.

The project involves extending the current runway on land that has already been committed for development since the Local Plans were updated in 2006.

This site, previously marred by construction waste abuse, will now be revitalised.

The plan includes the renovation of an existing structure that was once used as part of a helicopter service, rather than adding any new buildings to the site.
