Costa Coffee has opened its first-ever outlet in Gozo, setting up shop in St George’s Square, Victoria.

On Friday, Costa Coffee Malta took to social media to announce that it had just opened its doors to customers in Gozo.

“Our first ever outlet on the sister island is officially open in Pjazza San Ġorġ, Victoria!”

“Open every day between 08:00-21:00. We cannot wait to see you there,” the page wrote.

While many were quick to express their excitement at the British coffeehouse chain establishing a shop in Gozo, others weren’t too impressed.

Jayne Giordanella, a British actress who lives in Gozo, posted a statement on Facebook expressing how “saddened” she was by the news that “another big chain has muscled in on Gozo”.

Remarking that Costa’s post announcing the Gozo shop’s opening had garnered “over 200 likes”, Giordanella wrote: “If only those 200 likes would buy a coffee in a local cafe they would be sustaining the character of Gozo and not allow it to become just another carbon copy city.”
