This might be your last chance to have a te fit-tazza and a delicious, piping hot pastizz at the legendary Coney Island Bar in Gozo, as the almost 100-year old establishment is set to close by the end of this year, as reported by the Times of Malta.

The bar was passed onto Maria Debrincat, 80, and her sister Georgia, 76, who have been at it for more than six decades, receiving customers at the early hours of the working days.

“The landlord wants it back. But, can you blame him”, said the sisters, who cannot afford to pay the rent anymore, after it shot up from €100 yearly to €16,000 a year.

“There is no other shop like it”, the sisters said.

The pair reminisced about the days when the bar, headed by their father, would remain open all day long. They recalled how during the three days of Carnival, the bar would be packed to the brim, with customers enjoying the live symphonies of a musician.

When asked how they plan to spend their days now that they won’t be busy with the up keeping of the bar, the sisters replied “we will dance and play music”. However, they jokingly changed their answer, saying that they will probably stay at home and quarrel with each other.

“I was born here and would have liked to die here”, said one of the sisters, while expressing her dismay at the impossibility of her wishes since they have to hand over the keys to the property’s landlord.
