Gozo’s Azure Window Collapsed Eight Years Ago And We’re Still Not Over It

Eight years ago, Gozo lost one of its most treasured landmarks when the Azure Window collapsed into the sea during a ferocious storm.
The news shocked the Maltese Islands, leaving many in disbelief that the iconic structure was gone forever.
While warnings about its potential collapse had been circulating for years, nothing could have prepared us for the moment when it finally happened.
As a proud Gozitan from San Lawrenz (yes, that’s the village you pass through on the way to Dwejra, for those less familiar with Gozo’s geography), the loss felt personal.
The Azure Window wasn’t just a natural wonder—it was part of my life, a place I went to on my walks as well as a symbol of Gozo that graced postcards, films and travelers’ social media feeds.
I remember where I was when the news broke of the collapse. It was one of those moments that seemed surreal as my friends and I started to bargain and say it couldn’t have all come down.
The first time I went down to Dwejra after the collapse, the scene felt almost unrecognisable. The once-majestic arch was now just open space, leaving the area feeling strangely empty.
The Azure Window meant something different to everyone either a backdrop to countless family outings or for others, it was an unforgettable highlight of their travels.
And for us Gozitans, it was a source of immense pride—a landmark we thought we’d never lose in our lifetime.
While the Azure Window is gone, it still lives on in memories, photographs and the hearts of those who visited over the years.
If you have any photos of the Azure Window over the years, we’d love for you to share them with us so we can pay tribute to this natural wonder
