It’s Been Seven Years Since Gozo’s Iconic Azure Window Collapsed
Today marks seven years since we lost the legendary Azure Window in Dwejra, Gozo
The Azure Window was an iconic spot in Gozitan and Maltese culture, attracting tourists and serving as a beloved landmark for both Gozitans and Maltese.
On 8th March 2017, strong winds and rain took over the Maltese islands, leading to the tragic collapse of the massive rock structure.
Although it had been feared that it would collapse, everyone was shocked when it actually happened as some stated it occurred sooner than expected.
The geological rock formation famously served as a backdrop in many international movies and series including Clash of the Titans, Games of Thrones and the Count of Monte Cristo.
In 2022, Maltese photographer Mark Cassar creatively “reconstructed” the Azure Window using drones and lights to simulate its appearance in thin air.
The Azure Window now remains at the bottom of the sea bed in massive chunks of rock, with many venturing on dives to see the remains of the iconic landmark.
Did you get the chance to see the Azure Window before its collapse?
