Exciting news from Gozo! The third turtle nest of the year, discovered on July 13th at Ramla Bay, has successfully hatched after three days of eager anticipation.

The team from ERA, Nature Trust Malta (NTM), and a dedicated vet carefully opened the nest today to assess the results of this natural wonder.

Out of 88 eggs, six were not fertilised, and unfortunately, one of the remaining 82 hatchlings was found deceased in the nest, likely due to trampling by the other hatchlings during the hatching process.

An impressive 81 hatchlings made their way to the sea, while 12 remained nestled in the safety of the nest.

One of these 12 hatchlings was taken to the Xrobb L-Għaġin Nature Park and Wildlife Rehab Centre for rehabilitation due to a deformed flipper.

As these hatchlings journey to the ocean, it’s crucial for everyone to be extra cautious around nesting sites.

If you’re fortunate enough to witness a hatching, please avoid using lights or flash photography, and keep noise levels to a minimum to ensure a safe passage for these vulnerable creatures.
