Ongoing restoration works at Villa Frere and its gardens are breathing new life into this historically significant landmark.

Minister for National Heritage Owen Bonnici, recently paid a visit to witness the progress of the restoration project. Heritage Malta’s management and members of the NGO Friends of Villa Frere guided the Minister during his tour.

The restoration efforts have been focused on the Gardeners’ Cottage and Villa Hay, the latter serving as a retreat for John Hookham Frere’s wife in the gardens. Additionally, the restoration and reconstruction of a boundary wall with a neighbouring property are currently underway.

Villa Frere, built in the early 19th century in Tal-Pietà, served as the residence of the esteemed British diplomat, poet, scholar, and philanthropist, John Hookham Frere. After his wife’s passing in 1831, he lovingly crafted extensive terraced gardens at the back of the property, providing breathtaking views from Mdina to Valletta.

The garden’s charm attracted distinguished visitors, including Queen Mary of England in 1912 and Queen Marie of Romania in 1924. Villa Frere’s allure was so captivating that it was featured in the prestigious British publication Country Life in 1930, accompanied by stunning photographs.

Today, Heritage Malta officially owns Villa Frere, and following the signing of a memorandum of understanding in 2019, the administration was handed over to Friends of Villa Frere, ensuring its protection.

In 2020, the Planning Authority carried out a Grade 1 scheduling for Villa Frere and its gardens, further cementing its cultural significance. To increase awareness of its historical and cultural importance, the gardens have been periodically opened to the public.

As the restoration project progresses, Villa Frere stands as a testament to our rich heritage, inviting all to relish in its timeless beauty and the stories it holds from our past.
