Malta has an intriguing history with a multitude of discovered and undiscovered catacombs, harbouring extensive tunnel systems that sprawl across towns.

However, the Hypogeum boasts one of the largest tunnel systems on the island and holds one of its most significant mysteries. To this day, the findings and experiences associated with it continue to be discussed, leaving researchers scratching their heads.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum in Paola holds numerous mysteries and secrets, ranging from large humanoid figures to elongated human skulls.

The Hypogeum was first discovered by mistake in the year 1902 by a stone mason who was building around the area.

Over the years, the site was meticulously cared for, and by the end of 1903, it was opened to the public  and its excavation lasted till 1911.

The site gained traction due to various mysteries, such as the discovery of large elongated skulls whose origins remain unconfirmed.

However, the most enduring mystery revolves around the disappearance of a group of children and their teacher during a field trip to the Hypogeum in 1940. The area where they vanished was subsequently closed to the public.

THE WITNESS

Journalist Lois Jessup delved into the mysteries of the Hypogeum after hearing about its peculiar findings.

Despite warnings about its dangers, she embarked on an investigation with her friends. During their exploration, Jessup claimed to have encountered large humanoid creatures covered in hair, causing a strange gust of wind that extinguished their candle, plunging them into darkness. Jessup described encountering something inhuman, wet, and slippery, prompting her panicked retreat.

Upon returning to the surface, Jessup encountered a new guide who denied the existence of her previous guide, arousing suspicion. Reports later suggested that the tunnel’s collapse was responsible for the disappearance of the children, but no remains were ever found.

THE COVER UP

Jessup and local media were informed that the tunnel collapse rendered the area inaccessible, and no trace of the missing children was discovered.

Allegedly, screams and cries were heard for weeks following the incident. Despite ongoing efforts to uncover the truth, the area where the children vanished remains closed to the public.
