Watch: Local TikTok Creator Explains Coffee’s Unusual Origins In Malta
When you drink your coffee you’re reminded of the aroma, the bitterness and….its questionable historical origins?
In the spirit of International Coffee Day, Dark Malta Tours gives us a glimpse into the darker origins of coffee on the island. The earliest record of coffee in Malta was in 1633, when a reference was made to a slave being detained in a “Slave Café“, enjoying the hot beverage, of course, moments before being arrested.
Later documents showed that none other than the Knights of St. John would also queue up at these Cafés for the sole purpose of acquiring a cuppa.
So why were slaves the forefront of coffee on the island? Well, according to the content creator, Ottoman and Muslim slaves that were apprehended from the ongoing battles brought coffee beans with them to the premises from their homeland.
So next time you sip on your triple-glazed iced caramel latte make sure to thank the Ottomans.
