5 Areas In Malta You Need To Avoid Anytime It Rains

Article Featured Image

Inevitably, for what feels like the 100th time this year, Malta has flooded. Apart from the obvious health risks that come with flooding, there’s also the fact that it can just really ruin your day.

At this point, I’m sure it may be common knowledge to those who live in those areas but for the sake of everyone else here’s a list that everyone should keep handy.

These are five areas in Malta you need to avoid anytime it rains:

1. Msida

This is an obvious one. Since it’s a central area that leads to several other localities, many people have learned this the hard way. You need to be either fresh off the boat or living under a rock to not know that Msida turns into Atlantis with anything more than a light drizzle.

2. Birkirkara

Specifically Valley Road, and another well-known area. Given the fact that it literally has ‘Valley’ in the name, it’s no surprise that it’s an area that is very prone to flooding.

3. Ġzira/Ta’ Xbiex

As seen in several viral videos trending recently. Perhaps building so close to the sea wasn’t the greatest idea. This could also apply to most areas on the coastline.

4. Mellieħa

Here’s one for the people in the South. Apart from the fact that Mellieħa consists of a number of hills which can lead to flooding, there’s also a severe lack of efficient drains.

5. Marsaxlokk

Here’s one for the people in the North to be aware of. Similar to Ġzira, it’s a locality which faces the sea.

Bonus

Xlendi

For most Maltese people, getting stuck in a flood in Malta sucks. Getting stuck in a flood in Gozo somehow sucks even more. This is mainly because in the event of bad weather the Gozo Channel may stop working. If you do get stuck in Gozo, avoid Xlendi.

Overall, it’s important to remember which areas are most prone to flooding when planning any journeys. All jokes aside, if weather conditions appear dangerous, it’s important to keep safety a priority.
