Gen Z is all about ‘situationships’ – you’re either just talking to someone, having sex with them, or dating them, but almost never in a relationship.

A situationship is basically an undefined romantic relationship between two people.

Young people today can be dating, AND be mutually exclusive, but still won’t say they’re in a relationship.

Here are five types of situationships you will find in Malta, in 2023:

1. The classic friends with benefits

As the title reveals, this situationship is all about being friends… with benefits.

This can include the occasional make-out session, or having sex. People who are friends with benefits are free to date other people, and usually decide on not committing further due to either lack of romantic feelings, or lack of wanting to be in a relationship.

2. On and off, and on again

We all know that one friend who is constantly breaking up with her ‘boyfriend’ and then getting back together.

You never know whether to invite him to an event because you’re not sure what phase they’re going through. This type of situationship almost never works out, and both tend to permanently break up just because they’re always breaking up.

3. “Nearly” girlfriend/boyfriend

This type of situationship is usually just on the brink of becoming a relationship but something keeps holding them back.

This could be a family member which doesn’t approve, or one of them just went through a breakup and is not ready for that type of commitment yet – surprisingly, this one usually ends up hurting the most.

4. The safety net/back up

Do you have that one friend which you have plenty of chemistry with, and you’re 100% certain that in another universe you’d be dating them.

The safety net is someone who you will go to whenever you don’t find another plus-one for a certain event, or someone who you’d marry if you’re both not engaged by the age of 40.

5. The other woman (or man)

This type of love triangle can be tough.

You could get along perfectly well with someone and have lots of chemistry but they will never fully commit to you because they truly only love another person. Hopefully, the other person is not in a committed relationship with the one they love.

Whether you’re in a situationship or a relationship – it’s important to invest time in yourself, people are so eager to define their situationship and waste time by focusing on their love life, that they’ll forget about their own value as a sole person.

What type of situationships have you been in?
