That Amber Alert Warning About Franco Debono Is Not Real, Says Actual CPD In Its Serious Voice

In a world where fake news has become so sophisticated, one can never be too cautious. That’s why the Civil Protection Department actually distanced itself from a satirical news story warning of a Franco Debono amber alert, and reported it to the police for good measure.

The story was published by the satirical webpage Bis-Serjeta and featured five faces of Debono, each coloured different to represent a different national security threat.

Quaint so far, but the blog also included quotes by the CPD’s own director Emanuel Psaila.

“We should have paid more attention to the signs from the past few months,” Psaila was quoted as saying. “You should never take your eye off an ego that huge. We foolishly assumed that what happened seven years ago was a once-in-a-lifetime event. My god, how could we have been so blind?”

The best fake news stories are the ones which sound most believable, and presumably this must have been the case here.

However, if Psaila’s attempt was to scare Karl Stennienibarra into apologising or retracting the story, all it did was prompt him to report the CPD’s own Facebook post to the police force’s silly crimes unit.

After conducting our own research and contacting a number of high-ranking police sources, Lovin Malta can confirm that there is no such thing as a silly crimes unit within the police force.
