Agius Saliba And Metsola Among EU’s Most Influential MEPs
Malta’s MEPs are proving they can punch above their weight on the European stage. According to the Burson EU Influence Index 2025, Alex Agius Saliba and Roberta Metsola are among the European Parliament’s most influential figures.
The global PR firm’s index ranked Agius Saliba fourth in parliamentary influence and Metsola fifth in public influence, impressive showings out of 718 MEPs. Both also came out on top within their political groupings, with Agius Saliba leading the S&D in parliamentary influence and Metsola topping the EPP for public influence.
Burson’s analysis looks at factors like participation in decision-making, leadership style, political portfolios, and experience in shaping the European political agenda.
Agius Saliba’s high parliamentary ranking was credited to his leading roles in parliamentary delegations and his vice-presidency within the S&D group, while Metsola’s strong public influence stems from her position as President of the European Parliament, her media presence, and her “huge” social media audience.
While Agius Saliba ranked 451st in public influence, he said the fourth-place parliamentary ranking “fills me with energy and determination to continue working and improving the quality of life and working conditions of European citizens, especially those of the Maltese and Gozitans.”
The Burson index highlights that Malta’s MEPs are collectively over performing: despite holding just 0.84% of all European Parliament seats, Malta ranks 17th in parliamentary influence and 9th in public influence across the EU.
