UPDATE: At around 6pm local time, nearly two hours after the initial outages were reported, a number of users started regaining access to Facebook and Instagram.

Users worldwide have suddenly been hit with an unprecedented disruption as several Meta-owned platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, experienced a significant outage.

This incident has left hundreds of thousands of users scrambling for answers as they find themselves unable to access their favourite social media platforms.

Instagram users were greeted with error messages stating “Something went wrong” whenever they attempted to access the platform, while reports flooded in from across the globe indicating issues with Facebook’s services. With some being reportedly logged out of their accounts.

According to real-time internet and social media outage monitoring services, a spike in outage reports was observed around 4:20pm, Malta time, indicating the severity of the disruption.

Downdetector, a platform that tracks outages globally, recorded over 90,000 reports of Facebook being down, with Instagram following closely behind with over 16,000 reports. In the US alone some three hundred thousands reports flooded in, with sources inside Facebook telling the Daily Mail that even some of their office networks were down.

As users struggled to regain access to their accounts and content, many turned to alternative platforms, such as X, to express their frustrations and seek updates. Comments flooded in from disgruntled users, highlighting the scale of the outage and its impact on their daily lives.

“Everyone running to X to check if Insta is down,” wrote one user. “Not me thinking Facebook, Messenger and Insta had been hacked. Just turns out it’s down.”

Meta, the parent company of these platforms, has yet to provide a detailed explanation for the outage or an estimated timeline for when services might be restored.
