Malta is one of 13 EU member states which immediately responded to Turkey’s call for assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
Urban search and rescue teams are also being mobilised from Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania with Hungary, Italy, Spain, and Slovakia.
The 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit the Turkish city of Gaziantep earlier this morning, killing over 2,600 people in the country, as well as neighbouring Syria, and injuring thousands more, with the number expected to rise.
