A tragic accident unfolded at Bergamo Airport on Tuesday morning after a man lost his life when he was pulled into the engine of a plane preparing for departure.

The incident occurred at around 10:20am on the tarmac of the Orio al Serio International Airport. Authorities have yet to confirm what led to the fatal event, but budget airline Volotea, whose aircraft was involved, said it is fully cooperating with the investigation.

“We’re investigating reports of an incident involving our flight V73511 BGY–OVD, which occurred on the ground after boarding was completed and ready for departure,” the airline posted on X. “We’re aware that one individual has sustained serious injuries involving the aircraft engine. More information soon.”

Flight V73511 was scheduled to fly to Asturias, Spain. The victim, who suffered fatal injuries, was not immediately identified publicly.

As a result of the incident, multiple flights in and out of Bergamo were either cancelled or diverted.

These included Ryanair flight FR7325 from Malta, which was rerouted to Bologna Airport, and flight FR7324, scheduled to return from Bergamo to Malta at 1:35pm, which was cancelled altogether.

Bergamo Airport is one of Italy’s busiest, handling nearly 17.4 million passengers in 2024. It also serves as one of Ryanair’s three largest operational hubs in the country.

Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
