Norway has surged ahead, leaving all other countries in its smoke after 89% of the cars bought in 2024 were electric.
This works out to about nine out of 10 cars sold in the country being electric.
CEO of Norway’s leading car importer Ulf Tore Hekneby says, “We think it’s wrong to advise a customer to buy an ICE (internal combustion engine) car, because the future is electric,” says, “Long-range, high-charging speed. It’s hard to go back.”
The country has been the fastest to adopt electric vehicles (EV’s) and is becoming the first to phase out the selling of new cars that run on fossil fuels.
This switch didn’t come out of the blue, in fact, it has been three decades in the making.”It started already in the early 1990s, Little by little taxing petrol and diesel engine cars more, so they have become a lot more expensive to purchase, whereas electric cars have been exempted from taxes.” according to Christina Bu, secretary general of the Norwegian EV Association.
According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) published on Reuters, Malta’s percentage of electric cars sold in 2024 was 28.6% placing 6th after Norway, Denmark at 50.4%, Sweden at 34.4%, Netherlands at 33.2% and Finland at 28.8%.
Do you think Malta could follow in Norway’s skidmarks? Or will we be left behind in its trailblaze?
