Politicians from across the spectrum rushed to social media to condemn the tragic killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, describing the act as reprehensible and a chilling reminder of how polarised public discourse has become.

US President Donald Trump called for flags to be flown at half-staff and blamed heightened rhetoric, especially from the radical left, for creating an environment where violence becomes possible. Former presidents, governors, and lawmakers joined in mourning, emphasising that political disagreement should never lead to bloodshed.

Maltese politicians also weighed in with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg also taking to X to condemn the shooting, with both extending thoughts and prayers for him and his family.

Many also issued urgent calls for change, calling for civility, restraint in political speech, and stronger protections against political violence. Vice President JD Vance, said his legacy would be a reminder of what civil political engagement might look like. Governor Gavin Newsom lamented that this act must force us all to reject violence “in EVERY form.”
