Prime Minister Robert Abela has confirmed that paediatrician Dr Alaa al-Najjar and her family will be given shelter in Malta, following the devastating loss of nine of her ten children in an Israeli airstrike last Friday.

“On Sunday, I extended an offer to welcome this family to our country so we can provide the care and support they need,” Abela shared on social media.

“In the past few hours, through the Ministries for Foreign Affairs and Health, we’ve started the necessary procedures. Once the father is fit to travel, we will bring the al-Najjar family to Malta, just as we’ve done with many others.”

The Prime Minister also reiterated Malta’s call for peace: “While we continue to provide humanitarian aid, our country will remain a constant voice calling for a ceasefire — so that peace can prevail and no more innocent lives are lost.”

Abela is expected to officially recognise the State of Palestine on 20th June.
