Malta has reiterated its support for international laws and condemned nations who break them on the one-year anniversary of the beginning of the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“Malta believes that the way forward in terms of the Russian aggression on Ukraine is a resolution for peace based on international laws and the basic principles of the United Nations,” Minister for Foreign Affairs Ian Borg said during a Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.

In front of the nations of the world, he called for peace and an “urgent resolution” to the ongoing humanitarian disaster that has impacted the global economy.

Borg reiterated how as a country, Malta is “very much concerned with what is happening in Ukraine by the Russian Federation”, even owing to the fact that this goes against the basic principles of the United Nations.

He claimed that Russia’s actions, which go against international laws, should be condemned without any reservation, emphasising how those committing acts that go against human rights should be held accountable.

“Malta will continue to push, together with the international community, for the Russian Federation to withdraw its forces from the Ukrainian territory, and for a peaceful solution based on international laws and the principles of the United Nations.”

Borg concluded by stating how Malta is giving its support to the 11/5 resolution which promotes the remedy for the aggression against Ukraine, and further encouraged more countries to do so.
