Watch: Explore The Uncensored Library, A Minecraft Server Full Of Banned Articles From Around The World
Unfortunately, in 2024 we still find instances where oppressive regimes stifle media and censor information. Now creative solutions are helping to bridge information without facing this issue.
Reporters Without Boarders (RSF) has achieved a remarkable breakthrough with The Uncensored Library, a virtual library built in Minecraft, one of the world’s most popular video games.
On 12th March, in recognition of World Day Against Cyber Censorship, the digital library opened its doors, providing unrestricted access to banned articles from around the globe, thus safeguarding freedom of information.
Minecraft’s popularity, with over 145 million monthly players, makes it an ideal platform for sharing information. Known for its sprawling, block-built words that players can explore. Minecraft provided RSF with the perfect digital environment to bypass traditional censorship. In countries where independent media and websites are restricted, Minecraft remains accessible, offering a refuge for press freedom.
Within The Uncensored Library, players can read articles from censored journalists who have even been imprisoned, exiled or even killed for their work. Their stories, republished as in-game books, allow users to access uncensored narratives from countries like Egypt, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam.
Featured journalists include notable figures such as Jamal Khashoggi from Saudi Arabia and Nguyen Van Dai from Vietnam. Through these writings, players discover the realities of government repression, corruption, and the journalists’ courageous pursuit of truth.
The Uncensored Library itself, built by RSF in collaboration with the digital design studio BlockWorks, is an architectural marvel inspired by neoclassical design.
Spanning over 12.5 million blocks and crafted by 24 builders from 16 countries, the library embodies resilience and knowledge, making it a symbol of the global fight for free expression.
Within its grand halls, players can also access RSF’s World Press Freedom Index, alongside a wealth of information on press freedom in over 180 countries.
