PN MEP David Casa has called for Malta to recognise Palestine and for the European Union to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement.

Casa took the podium during a debate with two representatives of the Commission – including Glenn Micallef – in the European Parliament on Israel’s plans to siege the Gaza Strip.

“We have a humanitarian situation in the Middle East that is getting worse by the second,” Casa said, referring to Israel’s military campaign that has killed upwards of 50,000 people and displaced 90% of the two million population.

Casa condemned the Hamas attacks of 7th October, he called for all hostages to be released and for the dismantling of Hamas.

“However Hamas are not the journalists, the doctors, the innocent Palestinian women and men, the children, the babies and the providers of humanitarian aid.”

Casa called out Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for stepping over every limit of human decency. Due to that, Casa argued that the EU-Israel Association Agreement should be suspended.

This is a wide-ranging agreement that outlines the trade relationship and broader cooperation between the European Union and Israel. Just yesterday, the majority of member states approved a review of this agreement. Several MEPs during today’s plenary argued that a review is long overdue and not nearly enough and that this agreement should be immediately suspended.

He then appealed to all EU member states, Malta in particular, to recognise the Palestinian state “without any delay”.

“This is the only test of our humanity,” Casa powerfully concluded.

In his opening speech, Commissioner Micallef condemned the dire humanitarian situation and echoed the United Nation’s calls for allowing increased aid into Gaza, specifically in light of the growing famine resulting from Israel’s three-month blockade.

“This is a catastrophe. 100 children have died from malnutrition and 70,000 people are at risk.”
